Before the Reformation

In the centuries before the Reformation Oxford was a town filled with churches, chapels, monasteries, and convents. By far the biggest and most impressive buildings were not colleges or universities, but the great Abbeys at Osney and St Fridewide's and the enormous friaries of the Dominican and Franciscan Orders. Almost all of this would be swept away in the sixteenth century.
