Commemorating sites of suffering

Description

Set into the wall of Balliol College in Broad Street is this plaque, carved by Heather Howes (who died in 2012). It commemorates the three Protestant clerics burnt at the stake in Oxford: Hugh Latimer, one-time Bishop of Worcester, Nicholas Ridley, Bishop of London, and Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury. Opposite the plaque, in the road, a cross of granite marks the spot where they met their deaths.
