Title
Cardinal Newman window
Subject
Oriel's saint
Description
Oriel College commemorated John Henry Newman (1801-1890) in this stained-glass window designed by Vivienne Haig and placed at Easter 2001 in the Newman Oratory above the entrance to Oriel’s chapel. Newman was a leading figure in the Oxford Movement. Not least, he edited the Tracts for the Times, a series of works expounding their arguments, that prompted many to refer to the Movement’s supporters as Tractarians. His conversion to Roman Catholicism in 1845 was seen as a devastating blow and led many to conclude that the Tractarians were indeed nothing more than crypto-Catholics. In truth, the Movement continued and grew in power even as Newman made his career in another Church, becoming a Cardinal and, as of 2019, a saint.
