Mother Marian Hughes

Subject

An Anglican nun

Description

This photograph shows Mother Marian (Marian Rebecca Hughes, 1817-1912), the first woman to take religious vows in the Church of England since the Reformation, together with the sisterhood which she founded in Oxford in December 1849. Known as ‘The Society of the Holy and Undivided Trinity’, the sisterhood dedicated itself to serving the poor, sick, and needy. It was first based in St John’s Street but moved to a convent in Woodstock Road (now St Antony’s College), newly-built in 1866-68. She is buried in St Sepulchre’s cemetery, Walton Street.
