Title

James Martineau's note

Subject

A reluctant Oxonian

Description

James Martineau (1805-1900) was one of the leading theologians of the nineteenth century. A Unitarian, he taught at the Manchester Academy which was the predecessor of (Harris) Manchester College. Martineau opposed the institution’s move to Oxford, fearing that the distinctiveness of the Academy’s ideals would be diluted. He nonetheless attended the opening of the College and conducted the first service in the chapel in 1893.
