Description

Joseph Angus (1816-1902) was secretary of the Baptist Missionary Society, formed to send missionaries across the world to spread their beliefs. Among its earliest members were the ‘Serampore Trio’ – Dr Joshua Marshman (1768–1837), William Carey (1761–1834) and William Ward (1769–1822) – who founded the ecumenical Serampore College, outside Kolkata, north India, for educating local people and training ministers for India’s Christian Church. Serampore College is one of the oldest surviving educational institutions in India. A portrait of William Carey (1761–1834) with the Sanskrit scholar and Bangla writer Mrityunjaya Vidyalankar (c.1762–1819), painted in 1811 by Robert Home (1752–1834), hangs in Helwys Hall in the College.
