Pink Cheese

Description

In 2008, after the Jolly Farmers, Castle Tavern and Brewery Gayte pubs closed, Pink Cheese provided an alternative to The Coven as a new weekly club night. Students and local LGBT+ party people gathered to dance the night away to fun cheesy tunes on Thursdays at Imperial Royale in the old Coopers Jam Factory building on Frideswide Square.

The venue had changed management many times with some very shady characters so the local authorities were please to see a ‘gay’ night running there as there would rarely any trouble - unlike some of the other late night venues along Park End Street.

Pink Cheese was a welcoming and colourful night run by DJ Karl Drinkwater-Andrews (Cloud 9) and photograher Mazz Image. They had met as the current and former Chair of Oxford Pride and shared a vision to help enhance the nightlife of Oxfords queer scene. The venue proved to be such a success that Marc Abercrombie and local publican Neil Richie secured it as a gay owned, gay run venue in 2009; the Plush Lounge remained there for a decade before moving to its current home in the Oxford Union basement and former Purple Turtle club, in Frewin Court (off Cornmarket Street).
