And my Mum and Dad used to pick us up, well, in the summer, when I had younger brothers and sisters. But my very youngest sister was born during the war. And when she was little, Mum had a, well, a seat on the back of her bike, and my Dad also had a little seat on his bar. And his mum lived in Minster Road. [To the interviewer] Do you know Oxford? Do you know Minster Road? Yes, in the um, in the piece… that is the end where the golf course is, they live up there. That’s where they lived. And we used to go and always see Granny after we’d been swimming. But we always had a picnic. Mum and Dad often met us from school. And when I was at Central and my other sister was at the Technical, we got on our bikes and we went down St Aldates and came down along the towpath there and met Mum and Dad – or just Mum if she was coming. And we had our tea. And when we were in the pool and we wouldn’t come out, Mum used to say Dad’d said “First one out gets an extra cucumber sandwich!” So, we always heard that bit! Whether they had more in the boys’ [swimming area] or not, I don’t know. Ooh, they did have a slide into the shallow end. You know, just like the slides are – or were – in the recreation grounds. And we went down – because we lived at the Cowley Road hospital then, ‘cause my father was the deputy master there – and we went down Magdalen Road and down through – we didn’t have to go up to the road where Donnington Bridge is, it was the road before that – and we went down to Meadow Lane. And halfway along Meadow Lane when we went in, there was a field that we had to cross. And then you got the ferry and it went across. And I believe you can still see, there’s still a ring in the wall there where the ferry used to pull up. And if you want to see it, there’s a little backwater that runs one side and that’s where the ferry started, and it just went straight across. And we went to Long Bridges, but the trouble was, when my brother came with us, it was partitioned off. And the boys were not allowed to go anywhere near where the girls were. So mother stopped with us, but my brother – we had to have a picnic outside, because we couldn’t go in. But now, it’s all open, and it’s lovely there. But we only had the one side where the girls were and the boys had theirs, sadly. But it’s all different now, isn’t it? And we had, I can remember her name, Mrs Parker, was the um lady bathing attendant there. When you first went in there, on your left, was a little hut, and it had outside it, you know, the um… Person: The rules and regulations? Pat: No, no, the rescue… Person: Ah, lifesavers. Pat: Just in case you needed it. But inside there, or roundabout there, was the lady, the supervisor. Well, when you were young, on the right-hand side was a long building, and along the front of it, it had a brick, sort of, um, well I suppose waist-high, and then above it was a canvas, went all the way along. And then there was a benched seat at the back all the way along – I would say it was about as long as from there to there, the whole thing was. It had hooks all the way along for clothing, and a little bench underneath. Well, the under 10s went in there. And then there were bathing huts the rest of the way, but you were only allowed in there as an adult or you know an adult girl, or something, you could only go in those. So, if you were a child you went in the others. But that was girls only. And then there was a shallow end near where the, you know, the superintendent was, and there was steps into it, the shallow end. And then halfway along was a bridge that went from one side to the other, and you could walk over it. But the deep side was the other end, and then that had steps, you know, either side into it. Well, it did on the shallow end, it had either side. But it wasn’t paddling, the shallow – it was a little bit too deep for a paddler. You know, when you were very small, you went in and you had rubber ring. They didn’t have arm things or anything, just a rubber ring. Uhh, there was a ferry, and there was a tea house there, and there was Long Bridges. Umm, then eventually there was a footbridge put over there. I can remember the footbridge, as a child. And… eventually another road was built across and it was called Donnington Bridge Road. I’ve swum extensively round there, umm… because I used to go to the riverside centre at Donnington Bridge, canoeing and exploring. And we swam a lot, did a lot of snorkeling in the Thames and Backwater, which is the original route of the Thames. So if you’re looking for old things, go to the Backwater.
